Overview

This 90 hour qualification is designed to give learners the underpinning knowledge, skills and competencies to use counselling skills ethically and safely in a variety of contexts and roles.

This qualification is for those starting the first level of training as a professional counsellor, those who want to learn counselling skills in other professional or helping roles, and those who want to improve their professional and personal relationships as part of personal development.

This qualification will not teach learners how to be counsellors, but it will help them decide whether or not they want to continue to train as a counsellor.

Content

The CPCAB Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills course is made up of 7 mandatory learning outcomes, each of which has associated assessment criteria:

1. Use counselling skills ethically & safely
2. Establish and sustain a helping role
3. Work empathically as a helper
4. Focus on the helpee’s needs and concerns
5. Use self-awareness in the helping role
6. Use a range of counselling skills to facilitate the helping interaction
7. Use feedback and self-reflection to enhance counselling skills

Internal assessment is evidence based and you are assessed continually throughout the course by means of practical tasks, written journals, a presentation, assignment, feedback from peer and on-going assessment. Once you have completed two thirds of your course, you are expected to complete the external assessment. For this external assessment you will complete a reflective review paper over a 1 week period at home.

Entry Requirements

No previous training or experience required.

Other entry requirement considerations

Age – You must be at least 18yrs of age to enrol on this course. There is no upper age limit.

Commitment – You must be able to commit time and resources to undertake the practical applied elements and aim to attend at least 80% of the taught sessions.

This qualification is not suitable for those who are currently in a state of severe emotional difficulty and/or severe psychological distress as the course involves experiential elements that will involve some personal disclosure and associated personal developmental activities.

Opportunity to progress

This qualification could lead to employment or increase employability for those whose role is to support others in e.g. health and social care work, teaching and learning, advocacy and mediation, support and project work, other helping roles. It provides additional skills for those already in employment likely to lead to increased opportunities for promotion and advancement.

Learners may also apply for a place on the CPCAB Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies – CST-L3.

What do I need?

You will need to bring a notepad/pen for taking notes and a lever arch file for storing handouts and your work that you have completed during the course.
