Counselling Level 4 | Adult Learning Wales

Overview

This two-year (420 hours) part-time qualification gives you the knowledge, skills and competencies to work as a therapeutic counsellor in an agency context in both health care and non-medical settings. You will gain a secure understanding of how to develop and sustain therapeutic counselling relationships as well as developing self-awareness, which includes challenging your own prejudices, fears or issues within the counselling process. You will practice self-reflection and work within a model of counselling theory and skills.

 

Content

The course is made up of 7 mandatory units which will be assessed throughout the course by means of portfolio, self-reflective journal, written and oral presentations and case studies and skills practice.  In addition, learners are also required to complete a 100 hour supervised counselling placement which includes a placement log, a minimum of 10 hours personal counselling.

All of the units are compulsory:

Unit 1 – Working ethically, safely and professionally as a counsellor

Unit 2 – Working within a counselling relationship

Unit 3 – Working with client diversity in counselling work

Unit 4 – Working within a user-centred approach to counselling

Unit 5 – Working with self-awareness in the counselling process

Unit 6 – Working within a coherent framework of counselling theory and skills

Unit 7 – Working self-reflectively as a counsellor

Entry Requirements

Learners will need to have either completed the CPCAB Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills and the CPCAB Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies or equivalent.

Other entry requirement considerations:

Age – You must be at least 19yrs of age to enrol on this course. There is no upper age limit.

Commitment – You must be able to commit time and resources to undertake the practical applied elements and aim to attend at least 80% of the taught sessions.

This qualification is not suitable for those who are currently in a state of severe emotional difficulty and/or severe psychological distress as the course involves experiential elements that will involve some personal disclosure and associated personal developmental activities.

Opportunity to progress

Successful completion of this course means you will be able to provide a therapeutic counselling service – initially within the context of an agency’s service framework but later (with experience and support from the supervisor, or by completing PC-L5 or its equivalent) may progress to independent practice.

What do I need?

You will need to bring a notepad/pen for taking notes and lever arch files for storing handouts, reports from placement agency/supervisor and your assessed work that you have completed during the course.
