Overview

This course aims to introduce you to some of the basic concepts for understanding ancient religions.

Content

All of us have probably heard countless Greek myths, from Greek gods using humans as their pawns in the Trojan War to god Zeus, in various disguises, having various illicit ‘affairs’. But how important are such mythical accounts really if we wish to understand ancient religions? Whether in Rome, Greece, Egypt or the Celtic world, many ancient religions are actually very pragmatic: gods were worshipped for the wellbeing of a community, people were praying for a good harvest, for peace and stability. Large temples and sanctuaries mirror the attempt of governments to creates a sense of identity for their people. But there always was religion freedom. Countless shrines and altars, in public and in households, show people’s personal preferences. Individuals sought the help of the divine to be cured from a disease, to have a safe journey, not to die in childbirth, or to acquire their wealth. In many ways, ancient polytheistic religions appear similar to their modern counterparts, like Hinduism and Shinto. In the ancient world, religion was not static, it always evolved, especially in Roman times when new religious groups spread across the Empire, including Christians and the Jewish diaspora.
