This taster course will introduce learners to the formal elements of art - line and value

Content

In Session 1, learners will explore continuous line drawing, experimenting with different line weights and characteristics such as broken and wavering lines. In Session 2, learners will develop their understanding of value by creating a value scale, shading a sphere and producing a pencil drawing of an interior space or still life, applying tonal shading techniques to create depth and form.

Entry Requirements

None. The class is suitable for beginners and learners who have some experience in drawing and painting and want to take their skills further.

What Do I Need?

You will need a selection of art materials including pencils, coloured pencils or pastels, paint (for example watercolour or acrylic), drawing paper and appropriate paper for painting (e.g. thick or watercolour paper). You will also need brushes, a paint palette, a pencil sharpener and a selection of pencils. The tutor will provide some materials which you can try before buying items, however you may prefer to bring your own.
