Council Member - Carl Hoskins
I am 37 years old, working as a Shift Lead for Tesco in a store within the large convenience sector company. In 2020 I was elected to the role of Usdaw Union Learning Representative and signed up for workshops and courses with AOC|ALW. These are so enjoyable I am developing ways of sharing them with colleagues in my group.
After attending my first workshop, I realised that AOC|ALW has a wide range of accredited and informal courses relevant to my group colleagues. They have many barriers to studying - shift patterns, personal commitments, confidence, age - but often the main obstacle is effective communication. I want to share the opportunities that AOC|ALW offers with them.
My experience as a learner, retail shift leader and union rep. can make my contribution valuable to the organisation, I feel, by offering a retail worker’s perspective - on behalf of retail workers across Wales. Covid has hit this sector hard, so I am particularly keen on Health and Wellbeing provision.
I believe learning is important for everyone, and should be accessible to all no matter their experience. An avid supporter of lifelong learning, I want to promote all aspects of development through learning, for continual personal improvement. I am impressed by the quantity and quality of teaching that AOC|ALW offers, having experienced excellent support, and wish to help as many learners as possible by sharing my experience of the curriculum and of the guidance I have received as an AOC|ALW learner - and now Council member.
