Your tutor will explain if your course is accredited or not. Accredited courses are awarded by awarding organisations and if you pass the course you will receive a certificate in the post.

You may be eligible to apply for funding to support your learning. The amount you can get may depend on your personal circumstances, your age, joint family income and the level of course that you intend to study. If you are studying on one of our higher level courses, you may be eligible to receive financial support from Student Finance Wales.

Everyone’s experience will differ but we know from what learners have told us, the observations of our tutors and other staff, and research that adult learners can benefit in the following ways.

Increased confidence – Most learners tell us that by the end of one our courses they feel more confident. This can help in various ways including as a consumer or citizen, as a parent or in other relationships, when going to see the doctor or to meet a child’s teacher.

New skills and knowledge which can help with gaining employment or promotion at work, and can make a difference to families and communities as well. Parents can help their children with homework and children can see their parents as role models to copy. Adult learners are more likely to get involved with their children’s learning, improving outcomes.

Better Health - Those with health problems particularly, describe increases in well-being, with some saying that their learning gives them a reason for leaving the house and a structure to their lives. Research into adult learning and health have shown links with smoking cessation, better nutrition, lower risk of heart disease, the amount of exercise taken and life satisfaction. It has also been shown that adult learning leads to a sense of identity, an ability to cope and a feeling of purpose in life. There is also evidence that adult learning may delay the start of dementia.

Social Benefits - Learning with other adults is a social experience which can reduce isolation and lead to new friendships. These can be the springboard for greater involvement in local communities such as volunteering or joining with others to tackle some shared problem.

. . .and society as a whole - Adult learning can lead to a better understanding of people from different cultural and religious backgrounds resulting in greater tolerance of diversity. Some adult learners feel better informed about politics and empowered to play a bigger role in democracy.

We want you to have a positive experience and get as much as possible out of your course.

However, we recognise that adults can face all sorts of problems and challenges at different times in their lives.

We aim to be as informal and flexible as possible and if any of our learners are having problems we want to know about them. If you are worried about any aspect of your course and would like to talk things over with someone confidentially, talk to us on 03300 580845, we’re ready to listen.

If you have an additional learning need or disability that will affect your learning, it is important that you tell us as soon as possible so that appropriate support can be put in place. It’s always better if you tell us before you start the course, but this can also be done when applying online or when you fill out your enrolment form. You may be eligible to apply for ALS funding to help with providing human or technical support to assist you during your study. If you require the support of a BSL interpreter during your course please email learnerservices@adultlearning.wales or text 07715 904 304 at least two weeks before the start of your course. We will then book a BSL Interpreter to assist you. We cannot guarantee that a community venue will have a hearing loop, but if does not, we will aim to make arrangements for the tutor to loan a portable loop system for use during your course.

We are able to offer a range of additional support depending on your individual needs. This can range from supplying large text workbooks to loaning you a laptop so that you can complete your work using your preferred text settings. We can arrange for you to be supported by a learning support assistant who will be able to assist you with reading and if required they can also act as your scribe. We also have accessibility software called ReciteMe on our website and Moodle so you can personalise your view.

If you have had an assessment for dyslexia or suspect that you have dyslexia and require support, we will take steps to assist you. We can make arrangements to have workbooks and worksheets photocopied onto coloured paper as well as loaning overlays for use during your course. Our website and Moodle has accessibility software called ReciteMe which allows you to change the display to your preferred layout for reading. We can also arrange for you to be supported by a learning support assistant who will be able to assist you with reading and if required they can also act as your scribe.

It will help us help you, if you can tell us about your additional learning need before you start your course. You can do this in a number of ways. If you know the course that you are enrolling on, you could phone your local regional office and ask to speak to a curriculum delivery coordinator (CDC). They will be able to talk to you about the support you will need and they will arrange for this to be put in place.
