Overview

This course prepares you to begin working with young people in a range or youth work settings (Education Training Standards Wales Wales).

The purpose of the qualification is to prepare learners for further learning or training and/or develop knowledge and skills in youth work.

The Award in Youth Work Principles has been designed to ensure that all youth workers have access to the necessary training and qualifications and that unqualified workers are supported and encouraged to progress. The award is mapped to the National Occupational Standards.

Please note: From April 2017 it is a legal requirement that on completion of the Award in Youth Work Practice L2 and Certificate in Youth Work Practice Level 3 you register as a Support Youth Worker with Education Workforce Council (EWC) Wales. You cannot register with EWC on completion of the Award in Youth Work Principles. You must complete the Certificate in Youth Work Practice Level 2 or Level 3

Content

The Award in Youth Work is composed of a total of 4 units. To achieve the Award, the learner must achieve all 4 units
1. Engaging and Communicating with Young People
2. Theory of Youth Work
3. Safeguarding in a youth Work Setting
4. Young People’s Development

Learners must complete a range of tasks outlined in the assessment criteria and include: Written assignments / task sheets / observation / group and project work.

Learners must record at least 35 hours of youth work placement activities

Qualification

The Award is taught at the equivalent standard as A* - C GCSE.

The purpose of the qualification is to prepare learners for further learning or training and/or develop knowledge and skills in youth work.

Entry Requirements

Entry to the courses is subject to successful application. This can be requested from YCPW Team on YCPW link of Addysg Oedolion Cymru | Adult Learning Wales website

Learners will need:
• Literacy skills.
• Communication skills
• Digital Skills

Learners will need to:
• Interpret given tasks.
• Provide answers that are clear, logical and understandable.

Placement Requirements
On application you will need to evidence the following:
1. a clean and current DBS (see below)
2. an appropriate youth work placement where you can complete the work based practice for this course.
3.a field work supervisor who is a qualified youth worker at level 3 or above.

If you do not have any of these requirements, please contact the Youth Community and Playwork Team who will support you.

If you have a current DBS with spent or unspent convictions on it, please contact the Youth Community and Playwork Team. You may still be able to apply for the course, but will need to follow Addysg Oedolion Cymru| Adult Learning Wales Fitness to Practice Process.

Career Path

Achieving the Award will enable learners, at 18 to access the Certificate in Youth Work Level 2, or at 18 to access the Certificate in Youth Work Level 3

What Do I Need?

You will need a notepad and pen, a laptop for making notes and wifi access. Award e -portfolios will be provided by the college. If you do not have access to a laptop and/or wifi please contact the Youth Community and Playwork Team and we will support you to access one for the course.

You will also need to consider where you will complete your 35 hours of youth work practice during the course.
