Overview

This course prepares you to begin working with young people in a range or youth work settings (Education Training Standards Wales Wales).

The purpose of the qualification is to prepare learners for further learning or training and/or develop knowledge and skills in youth work.

The Award in Youth Work Practice has been designed to ensure that all youth workers have access to the necessary training and qualifications and that unqualified workers are supported and encouraged to progress. The award is mapped to the National Occupational Standards.

Please note: From April 2017 it is a legal requirement that on completion of the Award in Youth Work Practice L2 and Certificate in Youth Work Practice Level 3 you are legally required to register as a Support Youth Worker with Education Workforce Council (EWC) Wales.

Content

The Award in Youth Work is composed of a total of 4 units. To achieve the Award, the learner must achieve all 4 units
1. Engaging and Communicating with Young People
2. Theory of Youth Work
3. Safeguarding in a youth Work Setting
4. Young People’s Development

Learners must complete a range of tasks outlined in the assessment criteria and include: Written assignments / task sheets / observation / group and project work.

Learners must record at least 35 hours of placement activities

Learners must complete all units within two years of registration

Qualification

The Award is taught at the equivalent standard as A* - C GCSE.

The purpose of the qualification is to prepare learners for further learning or training and/or develop knowledge and skills in youth work.

Entry Requirements

Entry to the courses is subject to successful application. This can be requested from our Youth Community Play Work Team on the Youth Community Play Work link on our website.

Learners will need:
• Literacy skills.
• Communication skills.

Learners will need to:
• Interpret given tasks.
• Provide answers that are clear, logical and understandable.

Placement Requirements
Before the placement is commenced a current DBS is required, and a signed Placement Agreement Form must be submitted, signed supervisor/line manager who is qualified at level 3 or above.

Career Path

Achieving the Award will enable learners, at 18 to access the Certificate in Youth Work Level 2, or at 18 to access the Certificate in Youth Work Level 3.

What Do I Need?

You will need to bring notepad and pen and/or laptop for making notes. Award portfolios will be provided by us.
