Info?Flexible level 1, 2 and 3 qualifications in mathematics and English
If you need a nationally recognised qualification in mathematics or English, but can’t commit to attend classes over many months, our flexible courses may be the right choice for you.
What do we mean by flexible courses?
This is a mixture of self - directed learning, through the on-line Wales Essential Skills Toolkit (WEST) and classroom based learning. The purpose of the classroom - based learning is to prepare you for the formal tests associated with the Essential Skills Wales qualifications in Essential Application of Number Skills or Essential Communication Skills. Furthermore, our flexible test regime means you can sit the tests at various times throughout the year- and at test centres across Wales.
How long will it take to achieve the qualification?
This will depend on your starting point, for some the on-line phase will be nothing more than a brush up but for others it may take longer. We want you to pass first time so progression to the test preparation phase of learning will take longer for some than others, but typically you can expect to undergo 30 hours of on-line learning and 10 hours of classroom based test preparation.
Can I sit the test without on-line learning?
Yes, if your initial assessment outcome shows you already have the necessary skills to proceed to the test preparation phase of the course.
Is there a cost?
The courses are part funded by the Welsh Government. Costs will depend on your personal or work circumstances
Do I have to do the lower levels first or can I go straight to the level I’m hoping to achieve?
You can go straight to your chosen level but be aware you will not be permitted to begin the test preparation phase of your course until you can demonstrate through WEST that you’re ready to sit the test at that level.
Will I have access to support during the on-line phase of the course?
Yes, telephone and other means of communication are available prior to the classroom element of the course.
What’s involved in the tests themselves?
For either the Essential Application of Number Skills, or Essential Communication Skills qualifications you will sit a Controlled Task, which includes a series of activities you work through related to a specific topic. Success in the Controlled Task permits you to proceed to the next stage - an on-line Confirmatory Test.
When can I take the tests?
We run tests termly but dates and times are scheduled closer to the date.
