Financial Support
There are several options for those who might need financial support whilst learning. We have outlined these below and described how to apply. Applications should be made to the relevant body but if you need any help or advice with this, talk to us on 03300 580845
Financial Contingency Fund (FCF)
The Financial Contingency Fund (FCF) can help with the costs associated with your learning if you are facing financial hardship or difficulties.
Age range: There are no age restrictions on this funding.
Eligibility requirements: Your household income must be:
- £18,840 or below in households with no children
- £20,817 or below in households with one child
- £23,077 or below in households with two or more children.
How to apply: Download and complete the FCF application form and once the form has been completed, ask your tutor or a Curriculum Development Officer (CDC) to check your evidence. They must then sign to show that you are receiving one or more of the benefits or concessions listed on the form.
If you are not receiving any of these benefits, but are facing financial hardship, please fill in an Income/Outgoings form and provide two forms of evidence with it.

Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)
Education Maintenance Allowance is a weekly allowance of £30 (paid every two weeks) to help you with further education living costs.
Age range: 16-18
Eligibility requirements: You must be living in a household where the income is £20,817 or below if you are the only young person in the household, or £23,077 or below if there are other young people living there. You must also meet the nationality and residency criteria.
Course requirements: Your course must be Level 3 or below, and run for at least 12 guided hours per week for 10 weeks or more.
You must be attending a course which is designated ‘eligible for WGLG or EMA’. Please check with your tutor if your course is eligible before applying.

Welsh Government Learning Grant (WGLG)
The Welsh Government Learning Grant (WGLG) is a grant of up to £1,500 (paid in instalments once a term) which aims to encourage more people to continue with their education.
Age range: 19+
Eligibility requirements: Your household income must be £18,370 or less. You must also meet the nationality and residency criteria.
Course requirements: Your course must be at least 275 hours for the academic year and lead to a nationally recognised qualification, level 3 or below.
You must be attending a course which is designated ‘eligible for WGLG or EMA’. Please check with your tutor if your course is eligible before applying.
