Olga’s Efforts Are Rewarded!20-April-2017
Over the last few years, we have worked in partnership with Aberystwyth University, Wales TUC Cymru Learning Services, UNISON and other Campus unions to develop and provide workplace learning opportunities for staff working at the University.
We’ve helped run ‘Getting Online’ or Digital Skills courses from Absolute Beginners, Beginners+ to Advanced level for staff working in different teams across the University. The courses were specifically designed so that learners could develop their IT/digital skills so as to use the University’s own internal systems, as well as being able to take their skills beyond the classroom to be able to use google drive, book holidays and look to save money when buying online.
One of our learners, Olga, had never previously used a computer prior to the course, but found that she quickly picked it up. As she didn’t have a computer at home, she came in to work at the university each morning at 5am before her shift started in order to practise.
Olga showed such enthusiasm and commitment, that this led to her being nominated for our Margaret Jones 2017 Award. And furthermore, during a learners award ceremony held at Aberystwyth University, the outgoing university’s acting Vice-chancellor,
Professor John Grattan (pictured with Olga) while presenting everyone with the course certificates also recognised Olga’s individual efforts. He was so impressed with Olga’s dedication that he suggested that the University give her a computer to use at home.
Well done Olga, you deserve it! Happy computing. . .
