Inspire! Award Winners 2018!

We are proud to announce that our Rhyl Football Club in the Community group is the Community Project of the Year winner in the Inspire! 2018 Awards.

Addysg Oedolion Cymru | Adult Learning Wales are proud to work in partnership with projects in the community to bring learning opportunities to local areas in Wales. One such Community learning venture that has been particularly inspiring is Rhyl Football in the Community (FiTC).

Rhyl Football in the Community provides a range of courses for ‘hard to reach’ learners who need a second chance to gain confidence, skills and qualifications. These learners were referred by organisations such as JCP, the Probation Service and Careers Wales having faced significant challenges such as mental and physical illness, unemployment and criminal records. Courses offered include bite size course in money management and improving confidence, kickstart courses for employability skills and wellbeing and Compu clinic course to support digital literacy. In addition, the learners are encouraged to take up voluntary work at the club, for example, stewarding or administration work.

The venue has been a key factor in the success of the project with its community spirit, excellent facilities and access to ICT equipment. The tutor has also been key in encouraging learners to attend through his enthusiasm and ability to put the learners at ease. Feedback from learners has been that although initially sceptical about attending a course, they have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and feel they have gained skills which are worthwhile and will help them to move forward in life and work.

One particular learner, stands out as having benefitted from the project. Having been out of work for 6 months, and suffering from anxiety and depression, this learner was introduced to Rhyl FiTC. He was encouraged to attend courses to improve job search skills, CV writing and interview techniques. With a new and improved CV, this learner found himself receiving responses from job applications and was invited to interviews. This has now resulted in the learner securing permanent employment.

This learner commented 'I doubt I would be where I am now if I hadn't been directed to Rhyl FiTC...I am very grateful to everyone involved at Addysg Oedolion Cymru | Adult Learning Wales and also to Rhyl FiTC for helping me get back into the working world' - a true testament to the positive impact that community learning can have on an individual's life.
