Inspire! Awards Nominations 2018 - Flintshire County Council Streetscene

Flintshire County Council’s Streetscene department partnered with Unite the union and Addysg Oedolion Cymru | Adult Learning Wales to create a learning opportunity which would make a difference in the workplace.

The aim of the project was to help and encourage employees to understand the implication and significance of their role in keeping themselves and each other safe at work, to evaluate policies and processes and commit to make improvements in the workplace.

The council ensured that every Streetscene employee was assigned a workshop session making sure that the resources and logistics were in place to enable them to attend. Although the project is still ongoing, learners can see that this is a chance for their voice to be heard and for them to influence changes in their workplace.

The project is a clear example of how partnership working can help to create great learning opportunities for individuals and businesses alike. There has already been an increase in near-miss reports being received and it has been identified that the reporting procedures could be improved.

Improvements can also be seen in workplace culture and workforce engagement with one learner stating, ‘the course makes you think about your actions and behaviours at work’. Streetscene will now be continuing its work and have engaged the unions to look in further detail about the ideas and issues that the learners raised during their training.
