Inspire! Awards Nominations 2018 - Pontardawe Drama Group11-May-2018
Pontardawe drama group works in partnership with Pontardawe Arts Centre and Addysg Oedolion Cymru|Adult Learning Wales to provide a creative outlet for individuals with profound learning needs, tackling isolation and promoting independence.
The group was originally formed to provide a safe environment, free from judgement where learners can express themselves freely and gives individuals equal opportunities to shine. The provision is entirely learner led and ideas are discussed openly and developed if practical.
This adds to the huge sense of achievement that the learners gain along with promoting positive health and wellbeing and support for individuals who would not necessarily have the opportunity. The success of the group can be summarised by some of the feedback received from social services, personal assistants, families and support workers.
One such piece of feedback sums up the value of the group: ‘The results of the skills learned and confidence boosted are plainly evident at the end of the term shows staged by the group. The props are often made by art groups which the members of the drama group attend, and the music is sometimes sourced by the attendees themselves. These connections bring in the wider community and with it a growing awareness and acceptance of the lives of people with various disabling challenges. The benefits are more far reaching and much greater than just passing the tests and completing the course’.
