Inspire! Awards Nominations 2018 - Susan Wright11-May-2018
Following 10 years of depression, and spending much of her time indoors, Susan Wright felt it was time to make a change to her life and get back to being involved with others.
She received a leaflet from Communities First about different courses being delivered locally but due to a lack of confidence and low self-esteem, she was very anxious about enrolling. She saw that there was a sugar craft course and decided that might be a good one to do so eventually enrolled and hasn’t looked back since.
Susan has learned new skills, her confidence has grown and has met lots of lovely people along the way. She says, ‘my confidence has grown so much that I enrolled on more courses including felting, first aid, health and safety, food hygiene and coping with stress’. Susan also progressed onto a higher level of sugar craft.
Unfortunately, in 2017 she was diagnosed with throat cancer which was devastating, however she didn’t let it stop her. Susan enrolled on further courses as soon as she was able to and has found that the support and kindness she gets from her fellow learners has helped her cope.
Now, following the all clear from her cancer, Susan is continuing her studies and hopes to take an adult English class so that she can help her grandchildren with their reading and writing. Susan says ‘now my days are filled with exciting new challenges, projects and new friendships’. Her tutor sums it up ‘Susan is an inspiration to us all with her positive attitude and determination. For Susan the last ten months have had their ups and downs, but she never complains and encourages others to succeed’.
