Developing Language Skills in Lockdown

All learners are continuing to face tough time throughout the periods of lockdown. For those who are learning English as an additional language, life might can be particularly difficult. So, the learner support provided by our ESOL tutor Francesca Sgalia’s support has proved invaluable.

For many learners, additional factors have increased their anxiety. For example living in temporary accommodation, drug and alcohol misuse, vulnerability, and some with minimal understanding of English. Francesca ensured that the right support was available to her learners and adapted to fully online teaching, offering technical support to ensure learning could continue, ensuring access for all whatever a learner’s circumstances.

Francesca has gone above and beyond for her learners, supporting them through a range of online platforms and calling her learners to check their progress and well-being.

Nominator reflects,

“Francesca teaches a number of classes – face-to-face, blended and online.  Her face-to-face classes include challenging learners who, in addition to their limited English language skills, are in temporary accommodation, are being supported for substance misuse and homelessness. Francesca’s approach to supporting these learners has been outstanding particularly during this pandemic where many of these learners are vulnerable and do not understand local lockdown rules, i.e.; wearing a mask, social distancing etc.. She has shown remarkable care, patience and support for all of her learners despite many of the challenges they face and bring to class.”

Having discovered a passion for teaching by helping out at her son’s Primary school, Francesca has attained her ESOL qualifications, and continues to develop her skills as a teacher in order to offer the best support to her students.

“I always tell my students that we are never too old to learn, in the hope to inspire them to take on new classes and new learning challenges. My own tutoring and training ensures I continue to upskill myself, learning new ways and strategies to improve my teaching competence.”

Francesca is an inspiring, valued and popular colleague who has shown real dedication to her students.

Congratulations on your nomination Francesca, and best wishes from everyone at Addysg Oedolion Cymru | Adult Learning Wales.
