Teaching by Example18-January-2021
Jayne McAleer from Merthyr Tydfil teaches courses that develop skills to cope with everyday life including, Emotional Health and Well-being, Managing Anxiety, Stress Management, and Anger Management. Jayne has developed these courses to equip her learners with the tools and strategies to help them manage their everyday lives and be able to move on and overcome their barriers.
Jayne knows first-hand the struggles that ill health brings as she was diagnosed with M.E in her twenties. She has used her own story to motivate, encourage and empower others. As well as this, Jayne adapted to fully online teaching when lockdown meant that face-to-face classes were no longer available. She upskilled digitally, and further more passed on these skills to her learners, ensuring that they had the capability and means to interact and continue learning.
“I was initially concerned that people would find the home learning difficult or even invasive, but a common remark made is that they love having me in their living room - albeit virtually!”
Having gone the extra mile and by investing time in her learners, Jayne has encouraged them to think more positively about themselves, their interactions with family and friends, and how to successfully navigate life throughout lockdown.
“I always encourage people to ‘give adult learning a try’. There are so many benefits - the knowledge, confidence, opportunities and of course, socialising are so vital to us all. I am proud to say that I have seen many people go on to further education, new or extended careers, volunteering and perhaps, most important of all – they have been happier in themselves, with a sense of self and their self-worth.”
Jayne is a truly inspirational tutor and colleague and our best wishes go to her for this year’s Inspire Awards. Good luck Jayne!
