Beautiful bead embroidery from our Caerphilly Branch20-July-2021
Our Caerphilly Branch group of Beading Class learners have been busy over lockdown making beautiful jewellery. The branch, including learners aged 50-plus, started their Jewellery Making class a number of years ago. They have all now completed accredited courses with the guidance of tutor Gwyneth Davies who also teaches Welsh and I.T with us (at Addysg Oedolion Cymru | Adult Learning Wales).
This class was originally delivered from The Miners Community Centre (‘The Miners’ as it is affectionately known as in Caerphilly, served the healthcare needs of local people for nearly 90 years before becoming a community venue). Since the pandemic, the group switched to online delivery, which added a few extra newcomers from other locations across Wales.
During their classes, learners have made crystal dogs, owls, multi-strand cord bracelets, beaded stars, baubles, tree decorations, leather ladder bracelets, and rainbow crystal bracelets among other items, using St. Petersburg stitch bead embroidery, learning right angle weave, cubic right angle weave and a variety of other various techniques.
Our Curriculum Development Officer Jayne Murphy says, “Feedback from learners attending the course is that they are really enjoy it. It has helped with their mental health and wellbeing. Having the company during the lockdowns, seeing their group via Microsoft Teams sessions and keeping in touch with Gwyneth via emails has been invaluable! Learners are also very grateful for the loan of equipment from Addysg Oedolion Cymru | Adult Learning Wales to be able to access and participate in online classes.”
The Caerphilly Branch group of Beading Class learners hope to display work at the Main Library in Caerphilly in September.
Congratulations to all learners for their wonderful creative skills.

So, what is a ‘Branch’?
A Branch describes a group of learners who pursue their own chosen learning interests; the group is led by a self-managed committee where its members have the opportunity to practice democracy and develop skills for effective participation in wider society.
The branch is recognized by and affiliated to us (Addysg Oedolion Cymru | Adult Learning Wales), where we support learning and resource needs including the sourcing of tutors for branch provision; we also provide some financial assistance. To find out more, talk to us today!
