Breaking Through Barriers

The theme for Dyslexia Awareness Week 2022 is ‘Breaking Through Barriers’. At Adult Learning Wales we have a unique opportunity to break the barriers of negative experiences in education for learners with dyslexia.

By providing accessible and inclusive teaching we can ensure that these learners are able to access learning and develop strategies to achieve their full potential. From initial contact through our website, learners with dyslexia are supported with Recite Me accessibility software, that has a range of functions to enable learners to adapt our website to make it more accessible for them. This includes changing the colour, font or even language that the website appears in. Or having the text read out loud from the screen.

Our tutors have all been sent a universal learning provision pack that includes reading rulers and coloured overlays to help learners with dyslexia. Learners are able to access software and technology that supports them to complete assessments. Each office will shortly receive a resource pack of dyslexia friendly resources, that tutors can access as and when they need them.

Adult Learning Wales are continuing to break through barriers for learners with dyslexia by training a dyslexia specialist member of staff, who will be able to offer advice and support to tutors.
