Social Purpose in Adult Education

Raymond Henry Williams (31 August 1921 – 26 January 1988) was a Welsh socialist writer, academic, novelist and critic influential within the political ‘New Left’ and in wider culture.

‘What is education, and in particular, what is adult education for’, is a question posed by Raymond Williams throughout his work where his thoughts and findings are perhaps as relevant today as they were when they were first published. The question can be answered in so many different ways and the answer will often depend on the point of view of who is answering.

Our online event on 5th July, 10-11.30am, celebrates Raymond Williams’ birth and his legacy and seeks to examine social purpose, and especially with how Raymond Williams understood it; by this we mean the ways in which education contributes to society. This includes ways in which education helps us to relate to one another effectively, to understand how our society works, to understand our rights and responsibilities as citizens, to work with one another to build our communities and to confront challenges together such as climate change and inequality.

The event is to take the form of a discussion with individual reflections on how adult learning has brought about positive change, where invited speakers and panelists reflect on his work and his continued relevance for adult education in 21st century Britain. Panelists are to include Professor Daniel Williams, Dr. Jeremy Gass, Rob Humphreys our Council Chair John Graystone and our Chief Executive, Kathryn Robson.
