Following a car accident that injured him and changed his life, Ashok Chopra has used learning to change the direction of his life and develop a new career.

The accident caused damage to his right leg which meant over a year of therapy and the inability to continue in his current profession. Ashok felt his future was uncertain so decided to attend a an evening course on counselling skills.

After successfully achieving the Basic and Intermediate courses he progressed to the level 3 certificate in Counselling and then onto the level 4 diploma in therapeutic counselling. This involved many hours of self-directed study which her responded well to and successfully completed the course to become a qualified counsellor.

Ashok then decided to continue on his learning journey and enrolled in Glyndwr University on the Post-compulsory Education and Training course. To fulfil the needs of his placement, he joined his former tutor on a Thursday evening where he started to teach the programme himself.

Ashok says ‘a hugely positive change occurred. I have to pinch myself to believe that I am now teaching the course that started me off in this direction as well as sitting in with my tutor and mentor as part of the tutor team’. In his tutor’s words ‘the contribution Ash has made has had a huge impact on his learners, colleagues and development of the Counselling provision. As a former learner his empathetic approach to his learners serves to bring out the very best in them’.
