Cheryl is a 50+ learner who began her learning with Addysg Oedolion Cymru | Adult Learning Wales by volunteering for The Caerphilly Parent Network. With no prior learning experience, but a willingness to explore education and progress; she entered into learning eagerly, giving 110% and always interested in furthering her knowledge and skills. In turn, this has helped her to better understand her family and grand children’s needs.

Throughout the year, Cheryl completed a number of courses. Her enthusiasm and determination to continue learning is admirable. She has gained so many new skills from each course, as well as refine her I.T skills and has been able to share what she has learnt with her family and friends, setting a good example that it is important to embrace learning.

[Nominator reflects,] “Cheryl is kind and very popular with everyone that she meets. She is a very caring person who encourages others to develop their learning.” “This has extended to out of the classroom too, helping her community with food parcel deliveries during lockdown. She arranged cookery sessions online with parents who received the deliveries, helping them to follow the recipes. This has also allowed her to keep in touch with her family and friends regularly.”

Cheryl says, “The online courses have helped keep me sane during the pandemic! I have missed family and my grandchildren, as we have not been able to see each other or have personal contact. It has been very hard, especially as the little ones do not understand why it’s all changed. We all keep in touch, but it is still a difficult period. I try to help my friends and family where possible. We are all finding it is a struggle every day. I have been worried and stressed for us all, which has taken some adjusting to, as I am usually very upbeat.” She adds, “I have made new friends through the learning activities. has been so important for my mental health and wellbeing.”

Well done, and best ‘Inspire’ wishes from everyone at Addysg Oedolion Cymru | Adult Learning Wales.
