Wrexham Sewing learner, Robert Williams-Day shares his experience and wonderful images of creations made on his course!

We asked Robert;

How did you hear about the sewing course in Wrexham and what enticed you to join?
Robert said, “A friend, Emily, saw one of the posters for the Christmas Craft sessions at Plas Madoc and sent it to me. She’d been doing much of my sewing for me, so I got the hint! I had a little bit of experience prior to starting the course. I take part in historical re-enactments, which often involves making your own kit, though I’ve always had help. The biggest project I worked on before the course was a 12th-century monk’s costume. Emily helped with the design, layout, and cutting, and I did the sewing by following her plan. That said, it tends to fall apart and constantly needs running repairs!

What did you learn during the course?
“Too much to list! But the biggest takeaway is that I now understand how to do things properly and why they’re done a certain way. It’s given me the confidence and knowledge to make and alter clothes for my family as well. The course has been good for my mental health. It’s a great creative outlet and something I genuinely look forward to. I will definitely continue sewing!”

What do you plan to make next?
“I’ve got a long to-do list of re-enactment kit! Medieval braies (underpants) are high up on it. I’m also planning to make a hoodie styled to look like my monk’s habit—something practical but personal.”

Can you tell us more about the re-enactment?
“Sure! I’m part of a group called Historia Normannis. We’ve got chapters all over the country, and we focus on presenting the 12th century as accurately as possible. We put on shows across the UK—some with hundreds of people in full costume. It’s a great community and a brilliant way to bring history to life. My particular specialty is a Benedictine Monk that keeps bees!” 

Would you recommend the course to others?
“Absolutely. It’s been a lot of fun. I went in hoping to become more independent with making my re-enactment kit, and now I can. I’ve learned skills I’m genuinely using day to day.”
