South East Wales-based Tutor, Christina Roy, was invited to the Royal Garden Party on the 14th of May at Buckingham Palace, London, to celebrate and recognise the contribution of her work in the education and skills sector.

Christina works as a family learning coordinator at Cathays High School and leads the Parent Learning Group, which is also based at the school. Through her hard work and passion, many learners have benefited from the qualifications they have achieved, enabling them to develop themselves and to rejoin the workforce. Two of the projects Christina has worked on, the immunisation project and the food sharing project, are vital support systems which reach a much wider network beyond the classroom. This is a fantastic achievement for Christina to be recognised by His Majesty, King Charles, for her dedication and passion to both her learners and the adult community education system in Wales.

In a heartwarming gesture to represent the learners she champions, Christina brought a unique and deeply personal tribute as a gift to the King at the Palace: a framed picture of their fingerprints, artfully arranged to form a tree. This meaningful display served as a powerful symbol of the collective journey and achievements of her students, who were unable to be with her in person on the day. On her return home, both Christina and the learners were delighted to receive a letter from the Palace acknowledging the kind gesture of the gift.

As well as a trip to the Palace, the impact of the Parent Learning Group and Christina’s work has been recently recognised by Adult Learning Wales, with the group winning the 2025 Adult Learning Wales Learner Community Contribution Award.
