Denbigh Gardening Skills course starting in September!

Learners in Denbigh have been literally reaping the benefits of a Gardening Skills course run by Adult Learning Wales and ReSource Wales.

The course is held at the ReSource Wales centre at Cae Dai, Denbigh, a beautiful haven of trees, plants, and wildlife.  The natural location is tranquil and relaxing and makes it the perfect place to learn about plants and how to grow them successfully.  The sheltered, outdoor learning area and polytunnel allow learners to practise skills they have learnt, whatever the weather!

Our tutor, Wendy Nulty, is a seasoned grower with a background in environmental conservation and social permaculture She has created this great course with a focus on sustainability and the environment.  She is full of handy, practical tips to give learners the skills they need to plan and maintain an attractive and productive outdoor area.  Topics include:

  • Wildlife friendly gardening
  • Keeping your plants alive
  • Soil, composting and nutrients
  • Growing your own food
  • Harvesting and processing your food

Learner Geoff Edwards has thoroughly enjoyed the course and is using the skills in his own projects. Geoff says, “The Gardening Skills course has far exceeded my expectations. I really look forward to the sessions as I feel inspired by the venue, the tutor, and the wealth of interesting information we learn. I am always eager to implement what I learn when I get home. I have started my own 'no dig' project and am watching the fruit and veg I have sown from seed grow into mature plants. Next year I hope to increase the growing area, as something that I thought would overwhelm me now feels achievable. I have made new friends too, and I would encourage everyone to learn these basic but such important skills to grow their own food and look after the environment.”

Tutor Wendy says, “It’s been great to see the learners progressing through the course and taking part in the practical activities.  Although they arrive with different levels of knowledge and skills, everyone has learnt a lot and been able to practise their skills with us here at the centre.”

Our Curriculum Development Coordinator, Jane Watkins, says, ‘It’s great to visit the Gardening Skills class in its lovely setting and to hear how the learners are using their new skills at home, in work settings and in voluntary projects.”

The next Gardening Skills course will be starting in September.  Find details on our website here or get in touch with Wendy for further information

This course is funded through the Denbighshire Adult Community Learning grant.
