As we approach International Human Solidarity Day on 20th December 2024, it provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the ties that unite us as individuals, communities, and nations. At Adult Learning Wales, we see every day how lifelong learning brings people together, empowering individuals and strengthening the fabric of our society.  Lifelong learning allows us to share skills, celebrate diversity, and create opportunities for growth in every corner of Wales.

Learning does not stop at any particular age or stage. It is a continuous process, evolving to meet the needs of individuals and communities. Across Wales, we see inspiring examples of this in action: from Welsh heritage classes that celebrate our identity, to digital skills workshops that support learners in today’s interconnected world, to community groups sharing knowledge and experiences in local spaces. Every day, adult learning fosters confidence, connection, and hope.

At Adult Learning Wales, we are committed to providing inclusive opportunities for all learners. Whether in a village hall, a library, a workplace, or an online classroom, our learners come together to gain skills, build friendships, and create networks of support. The power of lifelong learning lies in its ability to transform lives. I have seen learners of all ages embark on new journeys, rediscover confidence, and unlock doors they thought were closed. This is what lifelong learning is about: creating opportunities, removing barriers, and supporting people to achieve their potential.

In Wales, our traditions such as cymanfa ganu (community singing festivals) and eisteddfodau (cultural gatherings) remind us of the importance of coming together to share knowledge, celebrate creativity, and strengthen our connections. Today, modern learning spaces carry this same spirit, bringing people of all backgrounds together to learn, share, and grow.

International Human Solidarity Day reminds us that, as a society, we are stronger when we come together. Lifelong learning offers a pathway to connection, understanding, and progress—helping individuals and communities adapt, thrive, and shape their own futures.
