A group of learners from the DOVE Workshop in Banwen, studying ‘Influential Women in Wales’ with their tutor, Catherine Davies, took a special trip to St. Fagans National Museum of History on 1st March. Celebrating St. David’s Day with an immersive experience in Welsh heritage, the learners share a strong interest in Welsh history and a passion for understanding the role of women in shaping society.

The visit was designed to enhance their learning by providing a hands-on exploration of Welsh culture. As they toured the museum, they engaged in discussions about key historical figures, particularly influential women, and took part in discussions and an interactive quiz to test their knowledge. Throughout the visit, the Welsh language was used, further enriching their experience of Wales’ cultural identity.

Exploring the historic buildings and exhibits gave the group a deeper appreciation of Welsh heritage. They also observed cultural activities, including folk dancing, harp playing, and a historical harp display, which highlighted the significance of music in Wales. A stop at the Institute and the Vulcan Pub provided insight into Welsh social history, while the opportunity to witness lambing gave them a glimpse into traditional farming practices.

All learners reported thoroughly enjoying the day, thanking Catherine for arranging the visit, with one asking, “Where are we going on our next trip?”

The trip allowed the learners to experience Welsh history first-hand, connecting their learning to broader cultural themes. The knowledge and experiences gained at St. Fagans will continue to inform their future learning with their tutor, as they prepare to engage in their next course, ‘An Introduction to Welsh Writers Writing in English.’
