Flintshire Sugarcraft learner Donna Woodworth tells us about the inspiration for her fabulous cake!

Donna says, “The inspiration for my cake came from my sister in law Denise, who has always liked goth and steampunk.

Steampunk is a design style inspired by Victorian-era industrialism. Science fiction author K.W. Jeter created the term steampunk in 1987 to describe a style of fantasy fiction that featured Victorian technology, especially technology powered by steam.

Over the last few years, this idea has been transferred to cake design. I loved the idea of making a steampunk style cake for my sister in law but she lives 10 hours away in the highlands of Scotland. I decided I had a chance to at least design one when we were asked to design a cake for the class. I had decided on dramatic black roses for the top and our teacher Ali encouraged me to dust the black roses with lustre food dust, then steam them to make them look metallic, and Wow!, the result was amazing and encouraged me to really go all out to make the design dramatic. Ali then told me how to make the fondant top hat, which I love. The cogs and antique compass were made using moulds but the rest were all hand made. The Sugarcraft class has taught me these things and more.

I love going to the classes as Ali shows and encourages you to try Sugarcraft and modelling and you are learning something new all the time. She encourages you to follow the process and then you are delighted with how things turn out in the end. I’ve met some lovely people through the class. So as well as learning lots of new skills you also end up with new friends. My ‘dummy’ cake is now going all the way to the highlands in a few weeks time to be displayed in my sister in laws dining room.

Tutor Dr Alison Bushell says, “I’m a very proud teacher! All my learners have done so well. This is the first time Donna has attempted something this technical and elaborate and she should be incredibly pleased with the result of her hard work.”

We’d like to congratulate Donna on making such a terrific cake!
