Wisen Fetwi Baley is a refugee from Eritrea who arrived in Swansea in May 2026. She came to the UK alone after experiencing significant hardship throughout her life. Her father was killed when she was very young, and her mother fled with her to Ethiopia to escape conflict and insecurity in Eritrea. Sadly, Wisen later lost her mother and grew up without family support, living with different families in Ethiopia.

Because of her circumstances, her education was limited, and she only attended school until the age of six. Despite these challenges, Wisen developed a strong desire to learn and improve her future opportunities.

Before arriving in the UK, Wisen travelled through several countries, including Kenya, Italy, and France, before reaching the UK in January 2026. She was initially accommodated in Luton before being relocated to Swansea in May.

Wisen has always been motivated to learn English. Before arriving in the UK, she taught herself basic English using YouTube and other online resources. Since settling in Swansea, she has actively engaged in ESOL classes and community‑based learning opportunities.

Through local organisations and support services, Wisen has accessed:

  • ESOL classes to improve her English language skills
  • Community integration activities to build confidence and social connections
  • Digital learning opportunities to support independent study and access essential services

Wisen has shown remarkable resilience, determination, and enthusiasm for learning. Her participation in ESOL classes has strengthened her communication skills and confidence, enabling her to engage more fully in her local community.

Her experience highlights the importance of:

  • Language education as a foundation for integration
  • Digital inclusion in accessing learning and services
  • Community support networks that reduce isolation and promote belonging
  • Lifelong learning as a pathway to independence and future employment

Wisen’s journey demonstrates how educational support and community engagement can help refugee learners overcome significant barriers and build a positive future. Swansea’s welcoming environment, combined with access to ESOL provision and community support, has played an important role in helping her develop confidence, language skills, and a sense of belonging in her new community.
