Human Rights Day 2024: “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now”
10-December-2024As we mark Human Rights Day 2024 on 10 December, this year’s theme, “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now,” reminds us that human rights are the cornerstone of dignity, equality, and freedom. It emphasises the need to safeguard these rights today to build a brighter, fairer future for all.
At Adult Learning Wales, we believe education is a fundamental human right, empowering individuals to assert their rights, overcome challenges, and contribute meaningfully to their communities. Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, celebrating its 76th anniversary, reaffirms this principle – everyone has the right to education. Our work aims to ensure that education is accessible, inclusive, and transformative for all adults, no matter their background or circumstances.
Many of our learners face significant barriers, including poverty, discrimination, and social exclusion. By addressing these challenges, we help them not only claim their right to education but also unlock opportunities for personal growth and active participation in society. Education is a catalyst for change, not just for individuals but for entire communities. Through our initiatives, such as Equality and Diversity programmes through our Anti-Racism work, we’ve witnessed learners grow into advocates for their own rights and the rights of others, creating a ripple effect of empowerment.
Human Rights Day is also a moment to recognise the universality and interconnectedness of rights. Education, healthcare, a clean environment, and social equity are inextricably linked. Our work at Adult Learning Wales extends beyond teaching to include advocacy and collaboration with communities, policymakers, and human rights organisations. Together, we strive to build a Wales where everyone’s rights are respected, and opportunities are truly equal.
As global challenges such as the climate crisis and rising inequalities test the resilience of our societies, education provides the tools for individuals to engage with these issues critically and constructively. Empowered learners can become informed citizens and active participants in shaping the world around them.
Human Rights Day is a time to reflect, but it is also a reminder that the work of safeguarding rights requires ongoing effort. At Adult Learning Wales, we are committed to breaking down barriers to education, fostering equity, and empowering individuals and communities to create a brighter, more equitable future.
As we join the global celebration of Human Rights Day, let us all remember that “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now” is not just a slogan—it is a call to make human rights a lived reality for everyone, today and for generations to come.
