Our Welsh Language and Culture course learners were treated to a very special visitor on the 1st of July 2021. BBC news anchor, journalist and presenter Huw Edwards visited the group and talked about the importance of learning about Wales, it’s history and how the preservation of the Welsh language is so important.

Tutor Sian Francis said, “It was great to hear Huw talk about the impact of the Welsh football team, in the Euro championship, as well as the global awareness of our amazing country, language and culture – Cymru.”

Sian has been teaching Welsh Culture and Customs for the past seven years, and has been teaching Level 1 and 2 in partnership with Addysg Oedolion Cymru | Adult Learning Wales for the past four years – these have proven to be extremely popular courses. The inclusion of inviting guest speakers to the classes started when Sian started playing Welsh music examples to her learners. One Welsh musician being Dafydd Iwan. Sian contacted Dafydd to check he was happy for her to include his music – and he was over the moon!

After a few conversations, Dafydd was invited to speak to Sian’s learners. Sian said it was a wonderful experience for all, and this encouraged her to reach out to other well known and inspirational Welsh public figures. Sian is passionate about where she is from and always embraces opportunities to involve as many people as she can, whether they are Welsh speaking or not.

Sian says, “As a Welsh speaker I am passionate about all things Welsh. The language isn’t too strong in the Flintshire area, so from the outset, our KIM Inspire (Kindness In Mind) learners were keen to include Welsh Language and Welsh History and Culture courses in our area.”

Even lockdown did not deter our learners. Microsoft Teams and Zoom allowed the groups to carry on and be able to offer this unique opportunity for people from all walks of life.

During Sian’s lessons, learners have been learning about Welsh History and Culture as well as learning everyday conversational Welsh. This has helped absolute beginners ask for food and drinks when shopping, as well as picking and buying Welsh birthday cards from their local shops. Some learners have also been successful in gaining a qualification accredited in partnership with Addysg Oedolion Cymru | Adult Learning Wales.

We would like to send huge congratulations to Sian and her learners for doing so well and our thanks to Huw Edwards for talking to them and sharing his passion for all things Welsh!
