International Day for the Abolition of Slavery: A Welsh Perspective

As we mark the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery on 2nd December, we must confront the reality that slavery, in its modern forms such as forced labour and human trafficking, persists globally and even here in Wales. While often hidden, exploitation is a stark reminder of the ongoing work needed to uphold the fundamental rights of freedom and dignity for all.

The Welsh Government has shown its commitment to eradicating modern slavery through policies and initiatives aimed at protecting vulnerable individuals, such as its Nation of Sanctuary vision. This approach creates a supportive environment for those fleeing exploitation and trafficking, providing a foundation for safety, learning, and recovery.

At Adult Learning Wales (ALW), we recognise the crucial role adult learning plays in tackling modern slavery. Through our extensive adult community learning provision, we reach individuals and communities across Wales, offering opportunities to develop skills, build resilience, and foster awareness. Learning is a powerful tool in recognising and resisting exploitation, while also addressing inequalities that often place people at risk.

ALW’s vast network of partner organisations strengthens this mission. Working alongside other advocates for human rights and safeguarding, we create pathways for individuals to escape cycles of vulnerability and build more secure futures. Our collaborative work ensures that adult learning is not just about skills but also about empowering communities to stand against exploitation and injustice.

On this International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, let us reflect on the role of adult learning and wider community provision in creating a society free from slavery. By working together—through partnerships, advocacy, and learning opportunities—we can ensure that freedom and dignity become the lived reality for everyone in Wales and beyond.
