On 3^rd December, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities serves as a vital reminder of the contributions, resilience, and leadership of persons with disabilities. It is also a moment for reflection—on the work already done and the significant steps still needed to create a society where inclusion and equity are embedded in every aspect of life.

This year’s theme, “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future,” highlights the necessity of recognising and supporting the voices of those with lived experience. Learning is one of the most powerful ways to achieve this, offering opportunities to challenge outdated perceptions, remove barriers, and empower individuals to lead and thrive.

These responsibilities extend to all learning providers, leaders, and decision-makers across Wales. Together, we must ensure that inclusion is not treated as an afterthought but is woven into the fabric of our learning practices and policies. This means creating spaces where every learner feels valued, addressing systemic barriers, and embracing diverse needs with understanding and respect.

The importance of this was evident earlier this year at our Annual Conference and AGM held in April, themed “Changing perceptions of disability: embedding inclusivity within adult learning.” It was a day of collaboration and insight, where advocates and practitioners came together to share strategies for creating more inclusive opportunities. From personal stories to practical workshops, the event underscored the vital role that learning plays in reshaping attitudes and fostering a society that celebrates diversity.

As we reflect on the significance of this day, we are reminded that advancing inclusion is a shared responsibility. It requires commitment and action from all levels—learners, practitioners, policymakers, and communities alike. By working together, we can create a Wales where learning is accessible to all, and where everyone, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to fulfil their potential.
