Ebbw Vale learner Sophie Morgan has credited Adult Learning Wales for helping her achieve her dream of attending university after she passed her Essential Skills Wales  Level 2 Application of Number qualification. Sophie, a full-time working mother of two, successfully re-sat and passed her final exam, to gain the qualification she requires to begin her nurse training at university.

Sophie expressed her gratitude for the support she received, particularly from her tutors, Jim Short, Amanda Salter and the Flexible Essential Skills Programme facilitator, Sian Williams.

“I would just like to say thank you to the tutors and Sian for all their support from start to finish,” she said. “After redoing my numeracy essential skills with Adult Learning Wales, I would highly recommend it to anyone who wishes to gain a qualification to pursue it here!!”

Initially cautious about learning via an online course delivered via Microsoft Teams, Sophie was pleasantly surprised by her experiences:

“The online course, I was a little apprehensive about it as I thought I would find it difficult on Teams rather than learning face-to-face, but I was very surprised. I was thoroughly impressed with the course online and the flexibility of the tutors, support and classes offered,” added Sophie.

For Flexible Essential Skills Programme Facilitator, Sian, seeing Sophie achieve her goal and passing her exams was a proud moment:

“When Sophie first started with her course, her fear of maths was evident; however, as the weeks went on, her confidence grew.  Sophie passed part of her qualification straight away, but struggled with other parts. But Sophie didn’t give up, which is the main thing. Sophie passed her qualification on her second resit, which was well-deserved due to all the hard work she had put in. “ 

“Sophie, it was a pleasure to help you and be a part of your learning journey. I really wish you good luck in your Nursing career and whatever life brings you.”

The Flexible Essential Skills Programme offers online Level 2 Essential Skills Wales qualifications in Application of Number and Communication.The qualification is widely accepted by colleges and universities in Wales as an equivalent to a GCSE A*-C grade in Maths and English, respectively. The programme focuses on developing essential numeracy and/or communication skills required for the qualification.
