A recent five-week Introduction to French course offered by Adult Learning Wales has received glowing feedback from participants eager to gain confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing a new language. Delivered online and led by experienced tutor Amanda Salter, the course provided a warm, encouraging space where learners of all backgrounds could take their first steps into the French language, and enjoy doing it.

The course, designed with beginners in mind, focused on everyday communication, helping learners get to grips with practical vocabulary and phrases. From ordering food and drink in a café to describing personal experiences and talking about holidays, learners explored real-life scenarios that made the language come to life.

Amanda, who has been teaching French for many years, said it was a joy to guide the group:

“It was wonderful to meet and support such a friendly group in their learning. Talking to people in a new language is such a boost to confidence, and it brings so many other benefits, whether it’s for travel, work, or just the fun of trying something new.”

And learners clearly felt the same. One participant, reflecting on their experience, shared:

“In just three live online lessons and one recorded session, I already feel less intimidated about continuing this journey. Amanda really took the time to tailor the lessons to our level and explained things clearly, especially how French differs from English. That made a big difference.”

The course stood out not only for its engaging content, but also for how it encouraged interaction. Many highlighted the speaking activities as a real highlight, especially the chance to practise conversational French in a safe, no-pressure environment.

“I really enjoyed the exercises where we took turns asking and answering questions,” said another learner. “The listening tasks were also incredibly useful. Having transcripts afterwards helped me understand the spelling and sentence structure, which can be tricky when you’re starting out.”

Interestingly, the course also attracted a few more experienced learners who saw it as a valuable opportunity to revisit the basics.

“Even though I’m in a more advanced class, this course helped me reinforce the foundations,” one learner explained. “It’s made me more confident when speaking and listening, and I’ve definitely improved my pronunciation and spelling. I feel more comfortable asking questions and talking about topics like countries and nationalities now.”

What came across most strongly from the feedback was the atmosphere Amanda created: one of support, encouragement, and shared enjoyment. Learners appreciated the friendly group dynamic and the freedom to ask questions without fear of judgment.

“It’s hard to choose a favourite moment,” said one participant, “because I genuinely enjoyed all the classes!”

The success of this short course is a reminder of just how powerful adult learning can be. Whether you’re dusting off old skills or starting from scratch, it’s never too late to learn something new, and enjoy the process.

Adult Learning Wales remains committed to providing inclusive, accessible courses that empower adult learners across Wales. With more language classes planned for the future, this introduction to French has clearly sparked a love of learning that’s set to grow.
