As part of the Welsh Culture and History provision within Adult Learning Wales in Neath Port Talbot, a programme of online courses exploring Welsh history, culture and identity was delivered during the 2025/26 academic year. These sessions were delivered by Adult Learning Wales tutor James Berry and brought together learners from across Wales who shared an interest in developing their understanding of the country’s past, traditions, and Welsh cultural heritage.

The programme of study included several themed courses delivered entirely online, including Welsh Mythology and Folklore, Wales: Politics and Protests in the 20th Century, Rebels and Resistance – The Story of Popular Uprisings in Wales, and The History of the Welsh Language. Each course explored a different aspect of Welsh heritage, offering learners the opportunity to examine topics ranging from traditional myths and legends to modern political movements and the development of the Welsh language.

Through these sessions, learners explored key events, figures and cultural narratives that have shaped Wales over time. The Welsh Mythology and Folklore course introduced learners to traditional stories and characters that remain central to Welsh cultural identity, while Rebels and Resistance examined historic uprisings and moments of popular resistance. The course on Wales: Politics and Protests in the 20th Century focused on significant political campaigns and movements that influenced modern Welsh society, and The History of the Welsh Language explored the language’s development, challenges, and revival across different historical periods.

The online courses created a welcoming and engaging learning environment. Tutor James used a combination of presentation, storytelling, and open discussion to encourage participation, allowing learners to share ideas and reflections throughout the sessions. The online format also enabled learners from a wide geographic area to participate, creating a diverse and collaborative learning group. The online format allowed learners to join from across Wales, including those from Powys and the Neath Port Talbot region, as well as from North Wales and from other parts of the country.

Learners responded positively to the opportunity to explore Welsh history and culture in greater depth. Feedback indicated that participants developed a stronger understanding of the topics covered and valued the chance to engage in discussion with others who shared a similar interest in Welsh heritage.

Overall, the online delivery of these courses demonstrates how digital provision can successfully support engagement with Welsh culture and history, widening access to learning opportunities and bringing together learners from communities across Wales.
