Last week, one of our full time Entry 1 ESOL classes had a lesson with a difference! The group were joined by costume maker, Becky Davies, who works in theatre and film!

Becky works freelance as a costume maker for theatre, film and TV. She grew up in North Wales, did an apprenticeship with the BBC in Cardiff, where she worked on Welsh language productions and Casualty. She graduated from Bristol Old Vic and currently works at the Royal Opera House in London.

As well as giving the learners a new experience in class, it also gave the learners information about the creative industries in Wales, Welsh medium entertainment, and possible career paths for the future.

The learners watched a trailer of Matilda the Musical, the latest film Becky worked on, and Becky talked about how she got into the industry, differences between working for theatre and film / TV and opportunities in the creative industries in South Wales.

To further incorporate their ESOL skills, the learners were asked to prepare 5 questions, using different tenses, to ask Becky.

Visitor, Becky Davies said, “It was a pleasure to meet the learners. I am really impressed by their English ability and their enthusiasm. They clearly want to learn, and everyone really engaged in the discussion. I hope they feel welcome in the UK and wish them all the very best for the future.”

Tutor, Sandra Warner said, “It was a valuable learning experience for all but especially as the learners got to hear a different voice from mine! The idea could easily be replicated with other groups, we just need to find people who are willing to engage with our learners and share their experiences.”

Learner, Nataliia Chechko said, “She is a beautiful and charming lady.  It was a very exciting and interesting meeting! Thank you!”

Learner, Carla Sanchez said, “thank you…we loved sharing time with her.”
