Having spent six years in the UK, our ESOL Entry 1 learner, Sergio Costa Oliveira joined one of our ESOL courses, Sergio kindly tells us his story.

Sergio says, “I am originally from Brazil. I am 49 years old and moved to the U.K in 2018 with my family, which includes my wife and two sons. My sons have become fluent in English and are planning to attend University this year. However, my wife and I do not yet have sufficient English proficiency to do so yet.

I am currently just an English student in Sadiah’s ESOL Entry 1 class every Wednesday and participate in a community learning online course by Swansea University for one hour daily.”

Our tutor Sadiah Ali said, “Sergio joined my ESOL Entry One class in November 2023. His commitment to further develop his English language skills has been enormously encouraging. He attends every lesson with a positive attitude and always shows a willingness to collaborate with his fellow students.”

Sergio continues, “I am an advanced user of IT tools such as Canva (for graphic design and video editing), Audacity (for sound editing), and various software and artificial intelligence tools for music and speech creation using neural voices. It was with these tools that I was able to create the video. My initial intention was to inspire my colleagues not to give up, as learning English is a long journey. They should carry on. However, upon further reflection, I believe I also wanted to prove to myself that I can do it. I am alive, and it is never too late!”

Our tutor Sadiah Ali said, “Adult Learning Wales provides an opportunity for students to learn, develop and continuously improve. The ESOL course enables students to enhance their career prospects and overcome challenging social barriers. It’s been a great pleasure having Sergio in my class, like many of my students he shows an absolute commitment to further developing his own skills.”

We’d like to thank Sergio for sharing his story and inspiring others with his video and hard work ethic. We wish him well with his continued studies.
