Our South Wales & Mid Wales Region’s ESOL learners had a fantastic time on their October excursion to Conwy Castle in North Wales on Saturday 16th October. Our learners were given a tour around the castle where they learned lots of historical facts about the castle and its previous inhabitants. Learners discovered the age of the castle and under whose command it was built. They were able to identify the castle's chambers, the eight towers and the castle's height.

After having a chance to take the long walk around the sandstone and limestone castle walls (full length of 1.3km) learners also visited the smallest house in the UK, which was filled with fascinating objects that were presented by a lady in full traditional Welsh Lady’s dress.

The excursion was a great way for our learners to experience Welsh culture in a meaningful and authentic way, make new friendships, improve their English and Welsh speaking skills and admire Welsh art.

Our tutor, Barbara Longshadow, received lots of positive feedback from the learners, including, “Thank you so much for this Saturday trip, it made my week. I can't wait for the next trip!”

“I loved the castle and the old buildings surrounding it!”

“Thank you so much for today! I love visiting castles and new places - Conwy is beautiful!”

“Today I made new friends and we loved exploring the castle walls together!”

Our tutor Barbara Longshadow says, “My learners were overjoyed to go somewhere new. They love Wales, its culture, and its nature. Having the opportunity to explore the castle and its walls made them curious about Welsh history. It is great to be able to teach them about Wales in the classroom, but a trip is more of an authentic way to make learning fun. These wonderful comments just go to show how much they enjoyed learning about Conwy Castle.”

We are so glad our learners had a great time!
