Our tutor Christina Roy goes that extra mile to help our ESOL Family Learning learners. . .

The ESOL parent learning group at Cathays High school delivers a variety of accredited and non-accredited courses in collaboration with Adult Learning Wales. The courses focuses on supporting our learners wellbeing and helping them integrate further into the community. However, our tutor Christina Roy has also been arranging additional guest speakers and opportunities for our learners to find out information and develop their skills in order to integrate and flourish more within their communities.

Our tutor Christina Roy tells us, “Every week we deliver a creative course and a cookery session. Once the learners are qualified, we encourage them to take part in a mini career fair and enrol with agencies or Career Wales to get back into work. This holistic approach supports the families and their children.

During the summer holidays we also supported a few Ukranian refugee families. Usually there are around 8 to 10 learners every term in Butetown and Cathays. These learners are from the Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities who want to make a difference in their lives. Our learners can improve their communications skills in English and meet other people who are experiencing similar circumstances. The learners benefit by making new friends and learning about other cultures. We also support families in need with our food share project. Recently some our learners had an opportunity to visit Oxford University through a collaboration with Cardiff University and The Brilliant Club. We actively seek opportunities for our learners to help them progress.

In addition to the core course criteria, we run awareness sessions with various charitable groups like ESYT, Race Council Cymru, Multilingual Helpline and Public Health Wales. Our learners have said that these have been very informative sessions and they have enjoyed learning as much as possible.”

Our tutor Christina Roy has worked beyond the requirements of her course delivery, and we are very proud of her for recognising our learners needs, her hard work and inspiring our learners.
