Overcoming life threatening obstacles and creating a new positive life.

Shabnam has endured long periods of isolation with considerable stress on her mental health. Following her incredible journey – both geographically speaking and personally - she took the step to look for opportunities to improve her employability and digital skillset. Shabnam contacted Addysg Oedolion Cymru | Adult Learning Wales for support and advice and after a series of discussions with one of our Curriculum Delivery Officers, she was offered the opportunity to enrol on the online Employability course.

[Nominator reflects,] “Shabnam has showed herself to be a very enthusiastic, willing, passionate and motivated learner who is keen to attend a range of courses that would improve her skills.” With her tutor’s help, Shabnam has been able to achieve her goals.

Shabnam says, “I wasn’t sure what to expect as I arrived to the UK. I had been let down so many times. This all changed when I discovered Addysg Oedolion Cymru | Adult Learning Wales; they gave me hope. I have not just learned new skills, but I’ve met new people, discussed openly my past for the first time - being met with nothing less than warmth, understanding and support to help me continue build a life where I can contribute positively to society.”

Shabnam has shown outstanding qualities and is a credit to the course, fitting in with the dynamics of the sessions and fully contributing to any tasks set to the group. She is a very popular member of the group and always shows willingness to help others. She has now progressed onto an Award in Education and Training (Level 3 Course) to start her career path into teaching. Her aim is to become fully qualified and realising her goal of passing on her experience and skills to other members of the community.

She adds, “My learning experience is beyond anything I dreamed about. Teachers who are skilful, patient and who encourage you to progress and develop further - especially my tutor Tracey Hickman. Courses that adapt with you, enlivening subjects that not only teach you new skills but also help you to become integrated with your local community and beyond. I would like to share that Addysg Oedolion Cymru | Adult Learning Wales, the Welsh community and the UK as a whole, have welcomed me as a long-lost daughter - despite being a refugee - without prejudice or judgement on my language, past or ethnicity. I was given encouragement and hope for a better future. Opportunities are equal for all so if I can do it, I’m sure anyone can!”

[Nominator reflects,] “I am positive that Shabnam will succeed in this career path and will be a great asset to the community.”

Our best Inspire wishes Shabnam, from everyone at Addysg Oedolion Cymru | Adult Learning Wales!
