A year after the partnership between Adult Learning Wales and Swansea MAD was launched, the collaboration has supported people in the Swansea region to gain valuable digital technology skills to help with their personal learning and future career development.

After securing funding from the Welsh Government Digital 2030 Capital Fund in 2023, the monies granted were used to purchase IT equipment, including Laptops, PCs and Virtual Reality Headsets that have been loaned in goodwill to Swansea MAD by Adult Learning Wales.

The technology has been put to good use by Swansea MAD, offering its community digital workshops and support in a range of topics including using the internet and email, safety and security online, Music Production, Virtual Reality, Metaverse and 3D Design.

Workshops have supported people to gain confidence and new digital skills, including creating potential opportunities in an advancing industry sector.

Managing the partnership on behalf of Adult Learning Wales is Rhydian Williams, the organisation’s Digital Development Manager. Rhydian said:

“Supporting Swansea MAD’s growth through the enhancement of their ‘technology for the future’ provision by gifting devices and equipment demonstrates our commitment to community-based organisations that are leading in this crucial area. Swansea MAD reaches the heart of its local community by offering valuable digital training skills to those with limited access to digital technology through the provided equipment. This past year has demonstrated that our core principles around community learning and development are very much in alignment. The learner case studies have shown the true value of this partnership. We are excited for the future and our continuing collaboration in many areas. Our partnership is one that we can all be truly proud of.”

Swansea MAD is a local grassroots, anti-poverty, anti-racist, pro-equality, pro-environmental, inclusive youth and community charity intolerant of discrimination and injustice.

Embedded in the community as a local community hub, Swansea MAD provides an inclusive safe space for people to access advocacy, creative arts, education, digital inclusion, employability support, training, heritage and projects to bring fairness and belonging and to influence change for the better. The charity also welcomes people to free community meals, hot drinks, toiletries, energy support, SIM cards, data, devices and friendship.

Rachel Benson, Fundraising and Sustainability Director for Swansea MAD added:

“Our partnership with Adult Learning Wales has supported Swansea MAD to offer a range of workshops and one-to-one support and has meant that people can access new digital equipment and technologies, developing confidence and new digital skills. In addition, access to new equipment has benefited people through opportunities to be creative, express themselves and have fun. We are looking forward to continuing our collaboration with Adult Learning Wales and working together to increase access to digital technology, education and training in Swansea.”

As the partnership enters its second year, the focus for both parties is to continue providing digital provision to people at Swansea MAD, as well as sharing some of the knowledge set between the two parties, which includes helping Adult Learning Wales’ staff members with their digital development activities. As well as creating so many opportunities for the population in Swansea through the partnership, the digital knowledge share is transferable through subject areas including social media, videography and website coding, which staff members in Adult Learning Wales’ digital and marketing departments are embracing as the ever-changing nature of digital technology shifts with its progressive development.
