Sewing skills for a worthy cause!

Our sewing groups in Rhyl, Llangollen and Wrexham have been learning new dressmaking skills with their tutor, Mary Parry, and making dresses and shorts for the ‘Dress a Girl Around the World’ charity. Our learners have learnt how to assemble a pattern, cut out fabric and follow the pattern to create the finished garment to a high standard. The newly made items will be sent to children living in poverty in countries such as Uganda, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Cameroon, Nigeria, Gambia and Syria. Our learners have enjoyed being able to support this great cause!

Since starting the courses in September, the groups have learnt many new techniques and produced a range of items such as bags, purses and cushion covers.

Tutor, Mary said, “It’s great to see the progress they have made in using the machines for different techniques and how they are putting those skills into action to give a professional finish to their items.”

Some of our learners undertook accredited units and attained certificates for their sewing skills from Agored Cymru.

…Here’s what our learners had to say!

“ALW Sewing class has been a great experience for me.  It is such a joy making things from scratch, seeing beautiful garments come from thread and fabric and the support of a great teacher.  It has helped my mental health and wellbeing.  I loved making the dresses for the ‘Dress a Girl’ charity. It’s lovely to see the joy on the faces of the children who receive the garments.”  Learner, KM

“I have put the skills learnt to good use and it has allowed me to be involved in such a worthy project as Dress a Girl Around the World.”  Learner, AR

“I have got the ‘sewing bug’ now!  Bless the girls and boys.  They look lovely in their dresses and shorts.”  Learner, VH

“The classes have given me a lot of confidence to do projects using the techniques we have learnt.” Learner, LP

“It has been interesting learning to make a dress.  I can’t believe I have made one, what a great skill to learn!” Learner, SL

“Enjoyed making the dress and learning new skills – never made one before so very happy! Many thanks to Adult Learning Wales and our tutor, Mary” Learner, JJ

“It has been an enjoyable experience, using colourful fabrics and connecting with other cultures” Learner, S

“Really enjoyed the course.  Felt proud having achieved something and produced a dress.” Learner, RR

“I have really gained in confidence, learning how to sew from a pattern and different skills and techniques.  It’s a privilege to make the dress.  The feeling of giving back gives me a real sense of purpose.” Learner, KW

The courses were arranged by Curriculum Delivery Coordinators, Jane Watkins and Laura Jones.

Jane says, “It’s been so rewarding to see how these courses have progressed.  We have invested in sewing machines and other equipment for the courses and it’s great to see the high-quality items being made.”

A big thank-you to our partners across Denbighshire and Wrexham who have helped make these courses successful – Denbighshire Leisure, North Wales Women’s Centre, Hwb Pengwern, Working Denbighshire, Red Cross, Hightown Resource centre, Llay Resource Centre.
