Supporting our learners via the Creative Hub via MIND Aberystwyth!

Our learner, Peter Alick joined the Creative Hub in mid Wales during lockdown, and like others, found it was a lifeline of support and connection. Peter tells us how his creative outlet has helped him.

Peter says, “I learnt about Creative Hub via MIND Aberystwyth with whom I was receiving Tenancy and Wellbeing Support at the time. I joined the course to meet new people, to gently reintegrate into social situations and to experiment with art as a form of therapy.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with Creative Hub and the wonderful people I have met there. I’ve learnt about the formal elements and how to better observe my surroundings in a new artistic perspective. I was also encouraged to play, to have fun and was supported throughout as I simply enjoyed the creative process and this is so important when it comes to a person’s healing journey, individually and collectively. Art is therapy.

Since leaving Creative Hub in the summer of 2022, I have successfully completed a WJEC Foundation Diploma in Art & Design at Coleg Ceredigion. During this course I was able to apply the lessons, the confidence, and the self-belief that I had gained through my time at Creative Hub. I finished the Coleg course with a high Merit which I am very proud of.

I have since successfully secured my place at Aberystwyth University where I will be studying a BA in Fine Art degree for the next 3 years. I am extremely nervous about this new chapter, and I do still struggle with social anxiety and panic attacks. However, I have come a long way in the last 3 years, and it is thanks to my caring friends at Creative Hub who have encouraged me to nurture the artist within me and to believe in myself. I am extremely grateful to each and every one of them.

Thank you for providing this service. It truly does make a difference”.

Peter’s tutor, Helen Ingham said, “It has been a pleasure to see Peter's confidence in himself and his art grow since then. I fully supported his application to join the foundation art course last year providing him with a reference. He has gone on to be accepted on a degree course, starting this academic year. I wish him every success!”

We’d like to thank Peter for sharing his story and wish him the very best of luck with his continued studies!
