On Thursday 27 June, ALW hosted our very first Swansea ESOL Learner Awards at the YMCA Swansea Theatre! The awards were attended by several groups of ESOL learners and their tutors to celebrate the fast-approaching end of term and all of the learners’ hard work throughout the academic year!

In readiness for the awards, tutors were asked to suggest categories for awards. The main categories chosen for this year were: Highest Attendance, Most Dedicated, Grammer Whiz/Super Speller & Learners’ Choice award!

As well as awards, there were also performances from learners including; Rumi who sung the Bangladeshi National anthem; Mustafa, who gave a talk on the benefits of learning English; a written piece titled, Diljan’s Unforgettable Journey of Learning English by Entry 3 learner Diljan, kindly read out by Regional Support Administrator, Olivia Stemmer, and learner Fanny performed a traditional song and dance from Venezuela.

After the awards and performances, learners shared dishes from a wide range of countries and were able to share stories together about their learning journey. The Swansea ESOL delivery team teach classes across several locations across Swansea, and it provided a great opportunity for learners to get together outside of the classroom.

Swansea Curriculum Development Coordinator Sam Al-Khanchi who also hosted the event, said:

“It’s been a fabulous day. It’s great for our learners to meet up outside of the classroom to celebrate their hard work and achievements! Our learners are taught in different classrooms across Swansea, and this was a fantastic opportunity to bring everyone together towards the end of the term. A big thank you to everyone who attended and to the Swansea YMCA for their continued support.

Tutor Nia Williams added:

“It has been a pleasure to work with so many determined and committed ESOL learners this year. I am very, very proud of my groups. The support and joy they bring to each other, the friendships that have been made, has made my job easy and fulfilling. Thank you!”
