Welsh Language Rights Day

6-December-2022
Share

We are pleased to support Welsh Language Rights Day once again this year. This annual event is held on 7th December, the date the Welsh Language Measure came into force over a decade ago.

The Measure confirms the official status of the Welsh language, and establishes the principle that the Welsh language should not be treated less favourably than the English language in Wales.

Welsh speakers have a right to receive Welsh language services without having to ask for those services. Employees in organisations also have a right to use Welsh in the workplace. The rights to use the Welsh language are created by the Welsh Language Standards.

While young people are the focus of this year's campaign Adult Learning Wales, together with the Welsh Language Commissioner, encourages people of all ages in Wales to ensure that they are aware of their rights and to remember to use the Welsh language in their daily lives.

You can support the Welsh Language Rights Day campaign on social media by following #MaeGenIHawl or visiting:

We welcome all learners who speak Welsh, have learnt Welsh or learners with an interest in the language to join us on St Dwynwen’s Day, Wednesday January 25th 2023 from 10am – 11:30am for a learner forum to celebrate the use of Welsh language and share how we can support you to use the language in your everyday learning. More information on this learner forum and how to sign up will be circulated separately- watch this space!
