On Monday 23rd May, our Swansea Curriculum Development Coordinator Sam Al-khanchi, and Head of Learner Services and Resources Manager, Cath Hicks, had the pleasure of attending the summer production of ‘What a Wonderful World’ at the Pontardawe Arts Centre – a production performed by our Pontardawe Drama Group learners.

The show was devised and directed by Keith Ivett and Stevie-Ann Fraser, the two tutors of the Drama Group, which meets weekly at the Pontardawe Arts Centre. The Group consists of 23 learners, aged between 18 and 70, who are part of our growing and vibrant Additional Learning Needs department in Swansea. Learners come together to enjoy sessions in drama, song, movement and dance. The group is also supported by Keith and Stevie-Ann’s daughter, Jamiee, who is a volunteer.

Sam Al-khanchi shared her experience of the production with us: “The production included different elements relating to animals and the natural world, including an opening influenced by the Lion King, an interesting, factual song about bees, a Disney ‘influenced under the sea’ number and a finale that incorporated British Sign Language.”

The sessions have made a huge difference to the member’s lives. One young lady, Catrin Howe has been attending the classes regularly for many years and has seen her confidence grow massively in that time.

Catrin said, “I used to be nervous, but now I love it!”

Catrin’s parents also commented, “This is the most important thing in her life at the moment. She adores it and has developed so much. We are really grateful that we get the opportunity to come and watch a show like this.”

Sam continued: “The show was fabulous – emotional, thought provoking and humbling – all rolled into one. The members of this group simply wouldn’t get the opportunity to take part in performing arts and be part of a show like this if it wasn’t for the incredible hard work of Keith & Stevie-Ann, and the support of Addysg Oedolion Cymru | Adult Learning Wales. Seeing how much the cast loved performing, and how much the audience enjoyed the show, was an absolute pleasure – I can’t wait to see the next show!”

We are so grateful for the opportunity to join events like this and are so glad to hear that this has helped our learners!
