Why choose Adult Learning Wales?

Tina Williams from Nelson, Caerphilly, has recently passed her exams in Application of Number (Maths) and Communication (English) Essential Skills, achieving an Essential Skills Wales Level 2 qualification, seen by many employers and universities in Wales as an equivalent of a GCSE in Mathematics and English. These qualifications have been vital to Tina, helping her in the next step of her career to become a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA). With the support of Adult Learning Wales (ALW), Tina was able to study around her busy day to day schedule, finding an evening class that fitted within her needs. Read on below to find why Tina chose to study with Adult Learning Wales:

“I decided to study Maths and English Essential Skills as a GCSE equivalent and as a mature student as I needed to gain these qualifications to further my career and gain a HLTA status within my school. Learning through Adult Learning Wales was recommended to me by my tutor on the HLTA course. I decided to take the opportunity and was surprised that it was available to me through MS Teams, plus I was able to study in the evenings which was perfect as I worked full time and have a family to organise, and it was free.”

“I contacted Sian Williams (ALW’s Flexible Essential Skills Programme Facilitator) who explained Essential Skills then set me up on WEST (Wales Essential Skills Toolkit), I then completed an online assessment with WEST to see firstly what level I would be learning at, this was a great baseline for me to see what I would need tutoring on.”

“I was advised and supported to join an Adult Learning Wales level 1 online maths course initially to build my skills and confidence with tutor Ann Jones – this was a very positive experience and when I was ready I moved to the Flexible Essential Skills Level 2 programme also learning online, with the Flexible Essential Skills facilitator explaining what days and times the classes were running.”

“I was very nervous at first as it has been at least 34 years since I was in high school. This was quickly changed due to how calming and helpful the tutors were, they quickly put you at ease. They were very reassuring and guaranteed they were there to help us achieve our goals and on hand to support us through the programme. When we were ready for the controlled tasks under exam conditions, I found the tutors extremely helpful and calming again putting you at ease when starting the exams.”

“I cannot thank them enough for everything they have all done, as if it was not for them, I would not have gained my Essential Skills Wales Level 2 qualification in both Communication and Application of Number, enabling me to pursue my HLTA. Thank you to all staff especially Sian Williams, Debbie Biggs (Comms L2 tutor), Ann Jones (AoN’s lower-level tutor) and Jim Short (AoN’s L2 tutor), you are all amazing!”

As Tina’s learner story shows, it is never too late to learn.
