Our learners were tasked with researching information about the Industrial Revolution and its effects on the landscape of Swansea.

Prior to the visit, they learned about the purpose of a census and how population changed during the 19th century. The data shared showed how quickly Swansea became an industrial area and how many people moved from agricultural villages to the town for work. The class discussed imports and exports and compared with their countries.

In the museum, the group took part in an interactive activity to locate landmarks in the Swansea Valley and beyond. They studied artefacts from the 19th Century and had to work out what the artefacts were and how and why they were used. These included a ceremonial shovel used to open Swansea Docks, a medicine cabinet and written records such as newspapers and needlework samplers.

Our E3 Tutor Nia said, “A lot of new vocabulary was learnt and practiced throughout the day and the learners came away with a better understanding of Swansea’s global importance during this period and how the area has always needed and welcomed migration.”

E3 tutor Sandra said, “ It was lovely to get out of the classroom and share some history and culture of Swansea with the group. The part-time learners will be joining the full-time class in September so they were able to get to know each other before next September – not only by pair work but over a well-earned coffee and cake in the café afterwards”

One of our learners, Diljan Sulaiman said, “I was particularly impressed by the artificial leg, made from wood and leather, with metal parts for strength. It was custom made and shows how early medical technology improved the lives of injured people.”

We’re glad our leaners had such a great time!
